There are lots of ways to be part of the team.

That’s Sew Austin is a community-focused sewing and creative studio built around access to good tools, helpful humans, and a welcoming place to learn, make things, and meet other creative people.

We’re looking for people who are reliable, kind, proactive, creative, and excited about helping other people feel more confident in a creative space.

You do not need to know everything. You do need to care about people, communicate well, respect a shared space, and be willing to learn how we do things at TSA.

Our current opportunities include Teachers, Guest Teachers, and Studio Monitors, with additional community and work-trade opportunities available throughout the year.

Teachers

  • Description:

    Teachers at That’s Sew Austin provide one-on-one instruction, group classes, workshops, and other creative programming based on their skills and interests.

    We welcome instructors across garment sewing, beginner sewing, patternmaking, fitting and alterations, quilting, cosplay and costuming, fiber arts, Cricut, embellishment, and other creative specialties.

    Teachers can join TSA in one of two ways:

    Pro Teachers want a more active role in the TSA community, including developing programming, building relationships with members, contributing ideas, and helping the studio grow.

    Adjunct Teachers primarily want to teach without the additional community-building and studio-development responsibilities of a Pro Teacher.

    Neither path is a lesser version of the other. They are designed for different levels of involvement, responsibility, and availability.

  • Responsibilities:

    Depending on the instructor, responsibilities may include:

    • Teaching private lessons

    • Teaching Building Blocks and beginner classes

    • Leading group classes, workshops, and multi-week projects

    • Developing specialty classes, workshops, series, or social clubs

    • Preparing for scheduled lessons and communicating appropriately with students

    • Maintaining a welcoming, patient, and encouraging learning environment

    • Following TSA teaching procedures and studio policies

    Pro Teachers may also take a more active role in programming, member relationships, community events, and studio growth.

  • Compensation:

    Teachers are paid independent contractors.

    Compensation varies based on teacher classification, teaching format, and level of involvement. Specific compensation will be discussed during the interview process.

Teacher Application

Guest Teacher

  • Description:

    Guest Teachers bring a specialized class, workshop, project, or creative skill to That’s Sew Austin without joining our regular teaching roster.

    This is a good fit for visiting instructors, local artists, designers, makers, creative business owners, or anyone with a specific skill or project they would like to teach to the TSA community.

  • Responsibilities:

    Guest Teachers generally:

    • Develop or propose a specific class or workshop

    • Coordinate the class format and materials with TSA

    • Prepare and teach the agreed-upon program

    • Create a welcoming and supportive learning environment

    • Follow TSA studio and teaching policies while onsite

    Guest teaching may be a one-time collaboration or lead to additional programming in the future.

  • Compensation:

    Guest Teacher compensation is determined based on the specific class, workshop, format, and arrangement with TSA.

    Compensation and class details are agreed upon before the event is scheduled.

Guest Teacher Application

Studio Monitor

  • Description:

    Studio Monitors help keep That’s Sew Austin welcoming, organized, functional, and ready for the people using it.

    This is not primarily a teaching role, and you do not need to be an advanced sewist.

    Studio Monitors may focus on Studio Care & Member Experience, Content & Community, or a combination of both.

    Studio Care & Member Experience monitors are not expected to provide formal sewing instruction. When a member needs teaching or technical support beyond basic studio navigation, monitors help connect them with the appropriate teacher or resource.

  • Responsibilities:

    Depending on the monitor’s focus, responsibilities may include:

    • Welcoming members and helping them navigate the studio

    • Keeping sewing stations, tools, supplies, and shared spaces organized and ready to use

    • Restocking, light tidying, simple audits, and reporting equipment or studio issues

    • Helping members locate resources without providing formal sewing instruction

    • Capturing photos, short-form video, projects, classes, and behind-the-scenes moments

    • Helping organize and contribute to TSA social media and community content

    Studio Monitoring is an active, hands-on role. There may be quiet periods, but the studio and the people using it come first.

  • Compensation:

    Studio Monitor positions are unpaid volunteer/work-trade opportunities designed to exchange your time and support for meaningful access to the studio and TSA community.

    Studio Monitors receive:

    • Unlimited studio time

    • Access to studio supplies

    • One free pattern print per month

    • 50% off classes

    • Free admission to TSA events

    Additional work-trade expectations, scheduling, and role-specific benefits will be discussed during the application and onboarding process.

Studio Monitor Application

Service Trade

  • Description:

    Service Trade Collaborators exchange professional, creative, or specialized services for access to TSA benefits.

    This may include support with marketing, photography, design, organization, beauty and wellness, creative services, or other skills that are useful to the studio and community.

  • Responsibilities:

    Depending on the collaboration, responsibilities may include:

    • Providing the agreed-upon service or project

    • Communicating clearly about scope, timing, and expectations

    • Coordinating scheduling with TSA

    • Completing agreed-upon work within the established timeframe

    • Communicating promptly if the scope or timeline needs to change

  • Compensation:

    Service Trade opportunities are non-monetary exchanges.

    Benefits are determined by the scope and value of the agreed-upon services and may include:

    • Studio time

    • Access to studio supplies

    • Class discounts

    • Event access

    • Pattern printing

    • Other agreed-upon TSA benefits

    All trade expectations and benefits are agreed upon before work begins.
